Otoliths, aqueous notes, 2025

Description:

Otolith is a collaborative project with Akina Thais on producing an immersive experimental and speculative sonic micro theatre for Casino Display’s Echoes and Resonances Collective Artistic Research exhibition on the 8th-15th of May.The work is a brief theatrical performance for one audience member at a time, based on the Brazilian tradition of Lambe-Lambe theatre. It imagines the sonorous oscillations which take place between an acoustic atmosphere and spatial proximity through gathered stories about fish otoliths. Otoliths are small, solid calcium carbonate structures, located in a fish’s ear, three times denser than the rest of the fish’s body, and an integral part of its orientation and auditory systems.

The research inquiry imagines sonorous oscillations between acoustic
atmospheres and spatial proximities, gathering stories around fish
otoliths—small stones found in certain species of fish’s ears—not for
their physiological properties, but for how folklore, alchemy, medicine,
archaeology, and the fish industry have touched upon their features and
folded them into diverse human imaginaries. At its core lies a
curiosity about how the delayed movements and transits of matter within
aqueous chambers might compose temporary sonic envelopments, atmospheres
that exist beyond the range of human hearing, prompting the
consideration of non-extractive forms of listening—being enveloped even
without apprehending sound. This sonic speculation resonates with the
spatial intimacy of Lambe-Lambe Theatre, the one-person mobile theatre
experience that originated in Salvador, Brazil, in 1989, where
proximity, gesture, and duration intertwine. Just as “Lambe-Lambe”
recalls the act of licking a photographic negative in its chemical
development, the research frames listening as a tactile, gestural
practice, an encounter where sound’s presence is sensed through its
atmospheric and bodily implications rather than heard directly.

Description:
Spinning Plates - by the river, we talk with spices is presented by Bodega Rotterdam and Verhalenhuis Belvédère
“Spinning Plates focuses on spices, stories about spices, culinary
traditions and their uses. During the event, we pay tribute to spices,
their history and their uses. Spices are an essential part of human
history, their journey around the world echoes the journey of humans.
This makes them part of collective and personal stories.”

For this special event I produced four soundscapes of different spices. Tumeric, Cinnamon, Chili and Pepper. I recorded and composed the audio files whilst engaging in deep listening practices.

The project was supported by Museumnacht010.

	Description:
Limited to our senses, it is difficult for us to comprehend what the world sounds like to a non-human animal. However, research illustrates some harsh realities that ecosystems endure under the pressures of sonic forces. Our Shared Acoustic World a five-channel audio installation explores the ecological impacts of anthropogenic noise on vocal non-human animals. The study is situated in the Netherlands and pays particular attention to industrial and motorised infrastructures, in close proximity to animal habitats, that are notoriously loud and widespread.Through a semi-fictional narrative I highlight the complications that surround the acoustic territories of machinery and nature; where different powers and meanings are entangled in the competition between being heard and being silenced.Interview with Benjamin Earl below.

Description:
This work is part of Who Speaks? A Project that tackles major issues including politics as a rhetorical gesture, law as an act of speech and aesthetics as a language of imagination. It aims to bring together academic researchers, non-profit activists, and public services such as Bits of Freedom and the Analysis and Research Department (DAO) of the Dutch Parliament, for joint knowledge exchange and discussion on AI driven democracy, language and decision-making. DAO provides substantive support to parliamentary investigations and gives advice to the Dutch Members of Parliament on information relevant to the parliamentary process.

Who Speaks? is part of a series of initiatives organised by the Queer Computing Consortium (QCC), co-founded by Ramon Amaro, Sheena Calvert, Niels Schrader, in collaboration with the Non Linear Narrative Master’s programme of the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague, UCL (University College London) History of Art Department and Camberwell College of Arts (CCW / University of the Arts London).

Transhumanist Rights questions boundaries between humans and cyborgs, and whether constitutional rights could be assigned to cyborgs in the future. He presents fictional cases of medical and military body enhancements by means of brain computer interfaces (BCI) set in the year 2030. With his video work Laoyan challenges the definition of what constitutes a person and raises ethical questions about the development and implementation of artificial intelligence technologies.

The project was supervised by Lauren Alexander, Mijke van der Drift, Lizzie Malcolm, Dan Powers and Niels Schrader.Format:
