
Lance Gapuz Laoyan is a sound artist based in Rotterdam, Netherlands. His artistic work considers different sonic ecologies of environments within the contexts of noise, semi-speculative storytelling and listening. Through the application of listening methodologies, poetry and recording technologies, Laoyan engages in site specific environments marked by the politics of what is considered nature. He is drawn to the re-positioning of human listening to harness understanding through presence. Laoyan has co-founded an indipendant record label and research platform onic [ of nature in cities ] for sound artist and musicians to explore field philosophy, field recording and listening as a starting point for music and sound productions.
As a Dj under the moniker Kaarst, he plays eclectic sets that merge various genres from field recordings, downtempo, jazz, ambient, left-field techno, uk funky or bass music.
Laoyan recieved his Masters of Art and Design degree in 2021 on the Non-Linear Narrative course at the Royal Academy of Arts, The Hague, (NL). He completed his Bachelors degree in Graphic Design in 2018 at the Manchester School of Art, Manchester (UK).
