/ Fluid Listening (2024)

Description:

Fluid Listening is an investigative and experimental site-specific research project that interweaves methodologies of multi-modal listening, field philosophy, poetry, speculative storytelling and sound walking. The research takes place in Ruigoord, Amsterdam, it is an artist run community village that holds space for cultural events that promote environmentalism and spirituality. Ruigoord is surrounded by a complex ecosystems of pollutants that effect various senses, the ear, the nose, the body and eyes, caused by the harbour industry and the nearby Schipol airport. Water from the North Sea also encapsulates Ruigoord providing nutrients for many organisms in the water and on land.

This piece is an experiment into designing a sound walking practice to form what I term an “empathetic ear” in which involves a variety of listening and storytelling methodologies that would prompt an empathetic perspective to natural environments, in this case this work focuses on water and its influences within this site.
